Frequently Asked Questions

What classes do you offer

I offer private lessons in your home and private and group classes at Greensboro Petco on W Wendover.

What training methods are used

I use positive motivation training methods. I teach skills such as luring, targeting and capturing. I also incorporate small amounts of clicker training in some situations.

My dog is being dominant. How do I show him that I'm the alpha?

I am sad to say that this question is asked too often. There has been a lot of incorrect information lately regarding dominance in dogs. The original "dominance theory" was based on studies of wolves in captivity. Applying this to dogs is problematic because wolves in captivity behave much differently from wolves in the wild and also because our domesticated dogs are not wolves.

Dogs are not trying to dominate us and we do not need to show them that we're "alpha". We need to be an effective leader for our dogs, which I will show you how to do without the use of force and scare tactics.

How do I get my dog to stop... [followed by any number of misbehaviors]

I have a lot of experience solving common and even uncommon behavior problems. Using a combination of basic obedience, effective leadership, desenstization and counter conditioning, I can show you how to stop them and how to prevent them if they haven't developed yet. The skills I teach you will last long after lessons are finished and will enable you to work with future problems that may come up later.

Is my dog too old for training?

No dog is too old for training. If your dog is an older dog and new problems have recently developed, I will always suggest a full vet check prior to beginning classes. There can be medical conditions that cause behavior problems. Also, before starting a training program with an older dog, it's a good idea to have him checked by a vet to make sure that we don't do anything physically uncomfortable for him. I can adjust the training to accomodate his needs, but only if I know what those needs are.

An older dog with a history of problem behaviors can be retrained, but it might take longer as those behaviors have been reinforced for a long time.
